Description: Amethyst is a variety of quartz. Quantities of Manganese and Iron provide the purple coloring, and are found in shades from deep purple to pale lavender. Amethyst has been described as far back as 315 B.C., and named for the Greek word meaning "not drunken", as it was believed to prevent intoxication. It is found in many places around the world, and has a hardness of 7.
Uses: Amethyst is considered a stone of spirituality and contentment, and is a stone of meditation.
